The Windows 11 May 2024 Update (KB5037771) has largely achieved stability, although a few users may encounter some challenges. As per user feedback, the update fails to resolve VPN connection issues for all users. Additionally, some PCs may experience prolonged download times for the update, followed by installation failures.
In the previous month, both Windows 11 and Windows 10 users reported difficulties with VPNs utilizing TPM-backed certificates. Microsoft acknowledged this issue, stating that VPNs were no longer functional, accompanied by an error message indicating a certificate deficiency compatible with the Extensible Authentication Protocol.
Although Microsoft claims to have addressed the “known issue” responsible for VPN connection failures following the April 9 updates, it appears unresolved for some users. Feedback from Reddit and the Feedback Hub indicates that Windows 11 KB5037771 still triggers VPN complications.
For instance, a user highlighted that VPN connectivity issues persist when attempting to access trusted sites across the network.
“VPN functionality remains impaired with KB5037771. Uninstalling the update resolved the issue temporarily. However, it automatically reinstalls itself. The uninstallation process is exceptionally protracted; personally confirmed, it remains at 70% indefinitely during installation, and upon restart, it stalls at 0%. Consequently, I have suspended Windows updates temporarily,” expressed one affected user in a Reddit post.
Microsoft may endeavor to address VPN-related issues once more in the forthcoming update. This recurrent attempt signifies the company’s commitment to resolving persistent bugs through iterative updates.
Also, some of you could still get explorer.exe crashes when rebooting your system.
This issue, which does not break anything in Windows, was first flagged in February but is still not fixed.
KB5037771 fails to install and causes issues with the Start menu or Search
One of the most reported issues is that the Windows 11 May 2024 Update process stays at 70% for a long time. Then, after restarting, the update could get stuck at 0%.
TechPK encountered prolonged download and installation durations for the May 2024 Update. On one device, the KB5037771 update failed to install initially, but resolving the issue was as simple as restarting the Windows Update service.
For those successfully downloading the update, encountering error code 0x800f0991 during the installation of updates KB5037771 and KB5036980 (.NET Framework) is a possibility.
Moreover, the KB5037771 May 2024 Update has induced Start and Windows Search malfunctions for certain users. Some experience a complete unresponsiveness of the Start menu, while others encounter the Search panel closing abruptly upon typing in the search bar, or encountering a black search results page.
Although the black Search and Start menu issues were previously addressed in a preview update, they appear to have persisted into the production channel.
Microsoft has acknowledged only one known issue officially, whereby changing profile pictures in local accounts may trigger an error message. However, a system reboot still applies the new picture despite the error.
